Brendan Green Makes National Biathlon Team

NWT Biathlon News Release
National Team Roller Ski Selection Races
Canmore Nordic Centre, Canmore Alberta
September 10-13, 2009

In a hotly contested series of Roller Ski Races, Brendan Green succeeded in achieving his first goal for this competitive season, a place on the Men’s Senior National Team.
Seventeen of Canada’s top biathletes were competing for the 3 open positions. He joins Alberta’s Jamie Robb and veteran Olympians JP Le Guellec and Robin Clegg for his second season with the team.

The competition consisted of three races, with the results of each athlete’s best two races used for the selection process. Brendan’s strongest finish came where he needed it most: in the last race of the series - the 15 km Modified Mass Start event. Although he entered the race ranking third, the results were so close that he had to come through with a top performance to secure his position. With solid shooting, he hit 16 of 20 targets to finish 2nd, only seconds behind Clegg. Complete results from the trials are now posted on the Biathlon Canada website.

Brendan will now have the opportunity to compete for Canada in World Cup 1 in Ostersund, Sweden Dec. 2-6, World Cup 2 in Hochfilzen, Austria Dec. 10-13 and World Cup 3 in Osrblie, Slovakia Dec. 17-20. Plans are underway for the team to relocate to Austria in October to prepare for these races. One of the youngest teams on the circuit, they will be striving to improve on their best ever results from last year.

Biathlon Canada officials are still hopeful that Canada will be able to field a Men’s relay team for the Vancouver Olympics, but no announcement has been made on this as yet.
